Customized Long Material Storage Rack for Laser Cutting Machines

A laser cutting machine is only as productive as the material flow feeding it. The cutting head can traverse a 12,000 mm sheet in seconds, but if the raw stock—tube, bar, profile, or plate—sits in a disorganized pile across the shop floor, the machine waits. Operators spend minutes per load locating the correct material, retrieving it from a static stack, and staging it at the machine inlet. Herochu built its customized long material storage rack for laser cutting machine integration to collapse that sequence into a single crane motion from rack to machine terminal.

The Laser Cutting Material Flow Problem

Modern fiber laser cutting systems process tube and profile stock at cycle times that leave traditional material handling far behind. A 6-meter bundle of structural tube enters the machine, is cut into finished parts, and exits in a fraction of the time it took to locate, retrieve, and stage that same bundle from floor storage. The bottleneck is not the laser; it is the warehouse interface.

Floor-stored long material compounds the problem. Bundles lean against walls, migrate across the floor under their own weight, and intermingle with adjacent stock. Finding a specific alloy, wall thickness, or diameter means walking the inventory, physically separating bundles, and then rigging the target for crane transport. Meanwhile the laser sits idle, the operator stands at the control, and production time evaporates.

Direct Rack-to-Terminal Crane Path

The Herochu storage rack eliminates floor staging entirely. Material is stored on telescopic or roll-out cantilever arms that extend the stored bundle fully into the aisle. An overhead crane picks the bundle vertically from the extended arm and transports it directly to the laser machine’s feed conveyor or loading table. No intermediate floor staging, no restacking, no forklift repositioning.

The Herochu HC-G6053 and HC-G9065 models are configured for this workflow. The HC-G6053 handles 6,000 mm stock at 3,000 kg per level across five tiers. The HC-G9065 extends to 9,000 mm lengths at 5,000 kg per level across six tiers, matching the longer bed lengths found on high-capacity laser systems. Both Herochu models use the same Q235B structural frame and dual-beam crossbar arm connection, ensuring the rack’s structural behavior is consistent regardless of the length class being stored.

Customization to Laser Cutting Material Profiles

Laser cutting machines consume a specific range of material profiles, and the storage rack must mirror that range. Herochu configures each installation around the customer’s actual material mix:

  • Structural tube and pipe: Round, square, and rectangular sections stored on flat arms with rubber sleeves to protect mill finish from scoring during arm extension and crane withdrawal.
  • Solid bar stock: Round and square bar stored at high density per tier, with compartmentalized cells preventing adjacent bundles from migrating during dynamic loading.
  • Extruded profiles: Aluminum and other extrusions stored with adjustable arm spacing to maintain three-point support and prevent deflection over the stored length.
  • Remnant and leftover stock: Dedicated trays on each tier hold cut lengths returned from the laser, keeping short pieces organized by material type for the next job that calls for them.

The clear space between columns is customizable from the standard 600 mm to accommodate wider bundle geometries. Tier count is adjustable beyond the standard configuration, allowing facilities to match storage capacity to the laser machine’s daily throughput rather than fitting the machine to a fixed rack size.

Structural Integrity Under Laser Shop Conditions

A laser cutting shop is a dynamic environment. Overhead cranes cycle continuously, bundles are withdrawn and replaced dozens of times per shift, and the floor transmits vibration from adjacent machinery. The storage rack must absorb these conditions without column drift, arm deflection, or mechanism degradation.

The Q235B high-strength steel frame provides the baseline. Yield strength of 235 MPa across columns, base plates, and arm connection points ensures the structure carries its rated load—3,000 to 5,000 kg per level—without progressive deformation. The dual-beam crossbar design at each arm junction distributes withdrawal forces across two parallel members, reducing stress concentration at the single most failure-prone point in any cantilever assembly.

Finite element analysis through Simsolid and Ansys verifies each custom configuration against the actual loading pattern it will see in service. The simulation models simultaneous full-load withdrawal across multiple tiers, dynamic crane withdrawal forces, and the vibration spectrum typical of a fabrication shop floor. Designs that show stress margins below threshold are re-engineered before production.

Space Recovery and Shop Layout Reconfiguration

Installing a dedicated long material storage rack alongside a laser cutting machine typically restructures the entire shop layout. Floor area previously consumed by flat-stacked material and the wide forklift aisles required to navigate around it is recovered—often 60 to 80 percent of the original footprint. That recovered space can be allocated to additional machine capacity, finished goods staging, or operator workspace.

Vertical storage up to 15 meters utilizes air space that floor storage leaves empty. A single column row of Herochu HC-G9065 racks along a wall line can hold the same inventory volume that previously occupied a quarter of the shop floor, with every bundle accessible by crane within minutes.

Safety Architecture and Operator Access

Material stored on extended roll-out arms is accessed without any operator or forklift entering the rack bay. The 2-degree to 4-degree upward tilt on loaded arms prevents round stock from rolling off during extension. Arm-end pin retainers and base pin locks secure the arm position at full extension. Cross-braced uprights increase torsional stiffness by 38 percent compared to unbraced configurations, stabilizing the column against the lateral forces of dynamic bundle withdrawal.

For laser shops running multiple shifts, these safety features are not optional. A 5,000 kg bundle of structural tube that shifts during crane withdrawal is a catastrophic event. The Herochu architecture is designed to make that event structurally impossible under rated load conditions.

Integration with WMS and Laser Machine Scheduling

The storage platform interfaces with warehouse management systems that coordinate material retrieval with laser machine job scheduling. When the machine control calls for a specific material, the WMS identifies the rack location, the operator extends the designated tier, and the crane completes the retrieval. Material tracking from storage through cutting is documented, supporting traceability requirements common in structural and aerospace fabrication.

This integration transforms the storage rack from a passive container into an active node in the production flow. Material is not merely stored; it is staged, sequenced, and delivered to the laser cutting machine on the schedule the machine demands.
