Telescopic Cantilever Storage Rack for Steel Bars

Steel bars behave differently from steel pipe. A round bar is solid, which means a six-meter length weighs substantially more than a tube of the same diameter, and a bundle of rebar is dense, irregular, and abrasive in a way that a pack of coated tube is not. Square bars twist under their own weight when supported at two points. Structural profiles — angles, channels, and I-sections — present sharp edges that bite into contact surfaces under load. Aluminum extrusions, though lighter, carry finishes that a single scratch can ruin.

A storage rack built for pipe will hold bars, but it will not hold them well. The contact forces differ, the sorting logic differs, and the damage modes differ. The Herochu telescopic cantilever storage rack for steel bars was engineered around these differences — not as a pipe rack repurposed for solid stock, but as a system whose arm geometry, compartment structure, and extension mechanics address what long solid bars actually do when they sit, move, and are retrieved.

Sorting by Diameter, Grade, and Cut Length

The first problem in bar storage is not weight — it is identification. A pipe bundle is homogeneous: one diameter, one wall thickness, one grade, banded at the mill. Bar inventory is not. A fabrication shop receives six-meter rounds in diameters from 12 mm to 80 mm, rebar in several grades, bright bars and black bars in the same delivery, and cut drops from previous jobs that are too short to return to the rack but too valuable to scrap. Stacking this variety on the floor produces a pile where nothing is identifiable without pulling it out.

Herochu solves this with independent compartments on both sides of the telescopic frame. Each compartment is a discrete storage position — a pair of arm carriers dedicated to one category of material. Whole six-meter bundles sit on one compartment; loose cut-offs sit on another, sorted by diameter or wall thickness or alloy grade. The operator does not search a pile; the operator selects the compartment that matches the pick list, extends that tier, and retrieves exactly the bar or bundle specified. A supervisor walking the aisle reads the compartment contents from the tags visible through the 600 mm vertical clearance between tiers, without extending or disturbing any tier.

Preventing Skew in Long Solid Bars

Solid bars are rigid enough that a small amount of sideways creep becomes a large problem. A six-meter round bar, if loaded against a single stop, will shift under vibration until one end projects past the arm and the other retreats. The projecting end becomes a hazard to forklift traffic. The retreating end disappears behind the column, invisible to the operator reaching for it. A skewed bundle of rebar is worse — the irregular surface of deformed bar grips the arm and resists being pushed back square by hand.

The dual-side discharge mechanism in the Herochu HC-G series is the feature that prevents this. The arm assemblies extend outward from both ends of the frame simultaneously, driven by a mechanical transmission that keeps the two sides in parallel. A bar or bundle loaded onto the extended arms moves outward evenly, both leading edges advancing at the same rate, so the load stays square to the aisle through the full extension stroke. There is no single-sided push to drift the material sideways. When the arms retract, the same dual-side drive returns the load to its stored position without the skew that single-sided systems accumulate over hundreds of cycles.

Surface Integrity for Coated and Finished Bars

Bars carry finishes that pipe often does not. Bright drawn bars have a machined surface that customers inspect for handling marks. Galvanized rebar has a coating that chips under point impact. Aluminum extrusions — window frames, structural profiles, heatsink stock — arrive anodized or painted, and a single drag across a bare steel arm edge will scratch the finish deep enough to fail a cosmetic inspection.

The telescopic arm principle eliminates the dragging that causes this damage. Because the arms extend into the aisle and the crane or forklift lowers the load directly onto the extended carriers, there is no sliding of the bundle across a fixed arm lip during placement. The load is set down vertically, the sling releases, and the arms retract carrying the load horizontally into storage. The contact surface is the dual-beam Q235B crossbar, which presents a broad, flat support that distributes the load across the bundle rather than concentrating it at two narrow points. For aluminum extrusions and coated bars, this is the difference between a stored load that arrives at the cutting station in mill condition and one that arrives scratched.

Six-Meter Bar Systems and the HC-G6053

Six meters is the dominant bar length in structural and fabrication steel supply. Rounds, squares, rebar, and structural angles arrive in six-meter stock lengths, and the HC-G6053 — rated for 6,000 mm stock at 3,000 kilograms per level across five tiers — is the model that carries them. The three-ton per-level rating covers a full bundle of medium-diameter round bar, which is denser and heavier per linear meter than the equivalent tube bundle. Five tiers give vertical density without exceeding typical crane hook height, and the tier count customizes upward for tall bays or downward for low-clearance buildings.

For operations that handle long structural sections — I-beams, wide flanges, channels in twelve-meter lengths — the HC-G12065 extends the same telescopic logic to 12,000 mm stock at five tons per level. The arm stroke, frame mass, and dual-beam construction scale with the stock length, so the mechanics that keep a six-meter bar square on the HC-G6053 keep a twelve-meter beam square on the HC-G12065.

Independent Compartments as an Inventory System

The independent compartment structure does more than sort material — it turns the rack into a physical inventory system. A compartment assigned to 20 mm round bar holds only 20 mm round bar. A compartment assigned to grade 60 rebar holds only grade 60 rebar. When the pick list calls for thirty lengths of 20 mm bar, the operator goes to the labeled compartment, extends that tier, and counts the lengths visible in the 600 mm clearance gap. No digging, no re-sorting, no contamination of one grade with another. Cut drops return to their assigned compartment by length category, so the short stock that accumulates through a week of cutting stays organized rather than accumulating as an unidentifiable pile.

For a bar stockyard that has accepted floor stacking as the cost of handling solid material, the telescopic cantilever storage rack is the system that recovers the floor, protects the finish, and makes every bar in inventory visible and retrievable. Herochu builds the HC-G series to the bar lengths and load ratings that steel service centers and fabrication shops actually carry, and the compartment logic turns a rack into an inventory discipline that pays back in search time saved and scrap avoided.
