Fiber laser cutting machines deliver exceptional cutting speed and precision, but their productivity is constrained by the loading interface. Manual sheet loading introduces variable idle time between cutting cycles—time that accumulates into significant capacity loss across a production shift. The Herochu servo swing steel plate suction loader addresses this bottleneck directly, synchronizing material delivery with laser cutting takt time to maximize machine utilization.
The Loading Bottleneck in Laser Cutting
A fiber laser cutting 1mm steel sheet may complete a job in approximately two minutes. If manual loading consumes 45 seconds between sheets, the laser sits idle for more than 25 percent of the working period. Across an eight-hour shift, that idle fraction represents the equivalent of two hours of lost cutting capacity. The economic impact is substantial: every minute of idle time is unbillable machine time.
The Herochu suction loader reduces the loading interval to a consistent sub-ten-second window. The swing arm extracts a raw plate from the material stack, rotates to the laser bed, positions the sheet against alignment pins or stops, and releases vacuum. The arm then returns to home position while cutting begins. The cycle is deterministic—no variation from operator fatigue, shift changes, or judgment differences.
Suction Technology and Sheet Handling
The loading end-effector uses a vacuum suction cup array sized to the plate format and weight. Model HC-R3015-500 carries 15 cups of 200mm diameter; the HC-R3015-1000 configuration uses 118 cups of 250mm diameter to distribute gripping force across large, thin sheets that might otherwise flex or slip.
Each cup features an independent open/close valve. When handling partial sheets or cut remnants, inactive cups remain closed, concentrating vacuum where contact exists. This design also enables the system to handle perforated or irregularly shaped blanks without manual adjustment.
The integrated sheet separation function prevents double-sheet pickup—a critical protection for fiber laser nozzles. If two plates were fed simultaneously, the focused laser beam could contact a second sheet at an incorrect focal distance, causing nozzle damage and scrapping the workpiece.

Servo Swing Motion
The swing arm rotates on a servo-driven axis with programmable angular velocity and acceleration profiles. For thin-gauge sheets that may warp under inertial load, a soft motion profile minimizes jerk. For heavy plates where cycle time is the priority, the system switches to a faster profile. This flexibility allows one manipulator to serve multiple material types without mechanical changes.
Rotation angle reaches ±60 degrees on standard models, with horizontal stroke of 2800mm providing coverage between raw material staging and the laser bed. The cantilever arm design allows the suction tooling to approach the laser table from above with minimal lateral deviation, reducing the risk of edge contact during placement.
Safety and Reliability
The power-off and air-off protection system holds material on the suction cups for at least five minutes after utility interruption. Check valves and a vacuum reservoir maintain grip during the hold window; a controlled bleed valve releases vacuum gradually after the protection period expires, preventing sudden drops.
Emergency stop braking engages automatically on fault detection or manual E-stop activation. The brake is spring-applied and electrically released—fail-safe by design.
All pneumatic lines use blue (intake) and red/orange (output) color coding. Connectors are labeled for identification during maintenance. The control cabinet communicates with the touch screen via standard network cable, simplifying diagnostics and supporting error logging for the last 100 events.

Integration with Laser Cutting Workflow
The loader operates in both manual and automatic modes. In automatic mode, the PLC can receive a “ready for next sheet” signal from the laser controller through dry-contact I/O or fieldbus communication. This handshake ensures the loader deposits the next sheet only when the laser bed is clear and ready—preventing collision and enabling true lights-out operation for extended periods.
For job shops processing varied sheet sizes, the control system stores loading recipes. Changeover involves selecting the program for the current job; the arm adjusts its motion profile and suction pattern automatically. This eliminates the manual repositioning and verification steps that consume operator time in high-mix production.
