Steel warehouses present a unique storage challenge. The material is heavy, long, and often stored in bundles that require mechanical handling regardless of the storage method. The difference between conventional storage and automated storage is not whether equipment lifts the material — it is whether the equipment also knows where the material is, retrieves it without human guidance, and records the transaction without manual entry.
Herochu’s Gantry Type ASRS Material Storage system addresses all three capabilities in a single platform designed for steel warehouse operations.
Gantry Architecture
The gantry is the system’s material handling core. It consists of a bridge structure spanning the storage towers, a lifting carriage mounted on the bridge, and a tray-engagement mechanism that interfaces with the storage trays. The bridge travels along floor-mounted rails that run the full length of the storage line. The lifting carriage moves vertically along the bridge structure.
This architecture concentrates all material movement on a single mechanical asset. The storage towers themselves are passive structures — no moving parts, no motors, no maintenance-intensive mechanisms. The result is a system with fewer components subject to wear and a correspondingly lower maintenance burden than designs that distribute handling equipment throughout the storage structure.
The gantry’s travel parameters are configurable within the range of 5 to 30 meters per minute horizontally and 5 to 15 meters per minute vertically. Positioning repeatability of ±2 millimeters ensures that tray engagement and deposition occur without misalignment, cycle after cycle, over the system’s operating life.
Storage Tower Design
The storage towers are modular steel structures assembled from standardized components. This modularity serves two purposes: it enables factory-controlled quality in the manufacturing of critical structural elements, and it permits configuration flexibility during installation and subsequent expansion.
Each tower layer is engineered for the specific loading conditions of the facility’s material mix. Standard configurations support 3,000 to 5,000 kilograms per layer. Tray dimensions are matched to material length, with 6,000-millimeter and 8,000-millimeter options as standard. The structural design includes provisions for sag prevention, ensuring that long material maintains dimensional stability regardless of storage duration.

The tower’s open architecture facilitates visual inspection of stored material during routine walkthroughs. Unlike enclosed storage systems, the gantry-type design allows supervisors to observe inventory conditions without accessing the storage zone.
Material Flow Integration
The gantry system delivers retrieved material to a designated pick station. This station is positioned at ergonomic height and configured for either forklift or overhead crane pickup. The tray remains with the material until the operator removes it, at which point the gantry returns the empty tray to its storage slot.
For facilities feeding automated processing equipment, the pick station can be configured as a transfer interface. The gantry delivers the tray to a conveyor or automated guided vehicle position, the material transfers to the processing line, and the empty tray returns to storage. This configuration supports unattended operation during lights-out shifts.
The reverse flow — receiving new material into storage — follows the same logic. Material arrives at the inbound station, the operator logs the material specification and quantity, and the gantry transfers it to an available storage slot. The inventory record updates automatically.
Controls and Software
The system operates through a PLC platform with touchscreen interface. The control software manages gantry motion, tray engagement, inventory tracking, and safety interlocks. The inventory module supports classification by material type, grade, dimension, heat number, and quantity. Retrieval can be initiated by any of these parameters.
The software maintains a real-time inventory display that reflects the actual contents of every storage slot. Stock counts are accurate without manual intervention. Reorder alerts can be configured based on minimum stock thresholds. The system generates inventory reports on demand, eliminating the periodic physical counts that disrupt warehouse operations.

Safety Systems
Safety is engineered into every operational layer. The gantry operates within a defined travel envelope protected by light curtains and physical barriers. Any breach of the safety envelope halts gantry motion immediately. The lifting carriage includes overload sensors that prevent engagement of trays exceeding rated capacity. Mechanical stops prevent over-travel in both horizontal and vertical axes.
The operator stations are positioned outside the gantry travel zone. Material is presented to the operator, not retrieved by the operator from within the storage structure. This reversal of the conventional workflow — goods to person rather than person to goods — eliminates the most common injury scenarios in steel warehouse operations: struck-by incidents from shifting loads, caught-between incidents during manual rigging, and vehicle-pedestrian collisions in storage aisles.
Application Scope
The gantry-type ASRS is suited to steel warehouses, fabrication shops, service centers, and distribution facilities handling long stock. It accommodates pipe, tube, bar, beam, channel, angle, and flat material in individual pieces or bundles. The modular architecture permits installations ranging from compact single-tower configurations for small operations to multi-tower systems serving high-volume production lines.
Herochu engineers each installation to the specific requirements of the facility. Layout, tower count, layer configuration, tray dimensions, and gantry parameters are all determined during the design phase based on the material mix, throughput requirements, and building geometry. The result is a system that fits the operation rather than forcing the operation to fit a standard product.
