100 Percent Fully Extendable Drawer Design
The drawer extension range matters as much as the load rating. A drawer that extends only 70 or 80 percent of its depth leaves the rear portion of the plate under the rack frame, unreachable by a vertically descending crane hook or vacuum lifter. The operator must then slide the sheet forward manually, which is neither safe nor practical when the plate weighs several hundred kilograms. When the drawer reaches its fully open position—locked by the spring-loaded safety pin—the entire stored plate sits in open air, accessible from directly above.
This full-exposure design also eliminates the blind spots that cause crane operators to misjudge hook placement. A partially hidden plate requires the operator to estimate the rear edge location, leading to off-center lifts that swing unpredictably as the load rises. With the complete plate visible, the vacuum lifter or hook magnet can be positioned precisely over the sheet’s center of gravity, and the lift proceeds vertically with minimal pendulum motion.
Overhead Crane and Vacuum Lifter Compatibility
Herochu racks are dimensioned to work with standard overhead crane bridge heights and hook approach distances. The drawer clear space—the vertical gap between the top of a stored sheet on one drawer and the underside of the drawer above it—is configurable at order time to accommodate the customer’s specific lifting equipment. For facilities using vacuum suction cup lifters, which require additional headroom for the frame to descend around the plate, Herochu specifies a minimum 300-millimeter approach clearance above the tallest stored sheet. For electromagnetic lifters, which have a lower profile, the clearance can be tighter.
The rack frame itself includes lifting lug anchor points at the top of each column, allowing the entire rack to be repositioned by crane if the facility layout changes. These lugs are welded through the column web and tied into internal stiffener plates, rated for the full assembled rack weight plus a 1.5x dynamic factor.
Forklift Access and Material Flow Integration
While overhead cranes handle the vertical lift, forklifts remain the primary horizontal transport method in most sheet metal warehouses. This pass-through configuration suits fabrication lines where raw sheet enters from the receiving dock side and cut blanks exit toward the laser cutter loading station on the opposite side. The hand crank mechanism is duplicated on both faces so operators on either aisle can access any drawer.
Space Efficiency and Floor Area Recovery
A standard fixed-shelf rack storing six sheet formats requires six dedicated bays with aisle access in front of each. Including aisle width and forklift turning radius, this arrangement typically consumes 80 to 100 square meters of floor area. A Herochu six-drawer vertical bay stores the same six formats within a footprint of roughly 12 square meters—the aisle remains the same, but the storage bays are consolidated into a single vertical column.
For a fabrication shop paying industrial rent, recovering 60 to 80 square meters of floor area translates directly into space for an additional machine tool, a quality inspection station, or simply wider aisles that improve forklift safety and cycle time. Aluminum sheet is particularly vulnerable: a single piece of steel swarf trapped between two stacked aluminum panels scores a scratch across the entire surface area when the sheets are dragged apart. For shops producing cosmetic-grade or anodized aluminum components, this surface damage generates scrap that erodes already thin fabrication margins.
The individual drawer layers in a Herochu hand-operated plate rack eliminate sheet-to-sheet contact entirely. Each sheet rests on its own flat bearing surface, supported by the ribbed platform at regular intervals to prevent sag-induced warping over long-term storage.
