Smart Single-Tower Sheet Metal VLS

The most overlooked efficiency drain in a sheet metal shop is not cutting speed. It is the time an operator spends hunting for a sheet and waiting for an overhead crane. Pulling a 6-meter carbon steel plate from a conventional floor stack with a forklift—from deciding which sheet to use to landing it on the laser bed—takes ten minutes on a good day. Herochu’s Smart Single-Tower Sheet Metal Vertical Lift System compresses that sequence to under a minute in most installations.

The logic behind the system is straightforward: store sheets vertically. A single-tower configuration occupies a remarkably small footprint—the base of a standard 3015 unit typically fits within 6 by 4 meters—yet through 8 to 13 customizable tray levels, it consolidates inventory that would otherwise consume one to two hundred square meters of floor space into a single vertical column. Each level carries 3 or 5 tons, which for most shops running 3000×1500mm or 4000×1500mm stock means a full stack of same-batch material per tray.

The operator interface is a PLC touchscreen. An operator enters sheet dimensions, thickness, or batch number, and the internal lift mechanism delivers the corresponding tray to the output station at 5 to 15 meters per minute, with repeat positioning accuracy held within ±2mm. That tolerance matters for a specific reason: if the downstream process involves an automated loading robot or a laser cutter’s shuttle table, the tray stops without needing secondary alignment. Herochu frames the tower with both forklift access and overhead crane lifting points, so the shop’s existing material handling equipment does not need retrofitting to work with the tower.

The real advantage of a single tower is not how much it stores but how fast it retrieves. In a conventional floor stack, if the target sheet is buried at the bottom, moving the upper stacks and extracting it can eat half an hour. Every tray in a Herochu single tower is independently addressable; the system knows exactly which level and which position holds each sheet. No restacking required. For laser cutting shops with frequent changeovers and mixed sheet specifications, this direct-access capability translates straight into reduced machine idle time.

ERP integration is standard. Inventory data—including sheet dimensions, weight, and remaining quantity per level—displays in real time on the touchscreen and pushes to the factory’s ERP or WMS through a standard interface. No more discovering discrepancies at month-end stocktake. For operations using a Herochu single tower as a buffer for a laser cutting line, one operator can manage both the tower and the cutter, because the retrieval action has been absorbed by the system.

On the safety side, the tower structure uses heavy-gauge steel, and the lift mechanism carries fail-safe braking. Operators no longer climb ladders or stand on forklift forks to reach sheets; heavy plates arrive at waist height. If the shop has an overhead crane but the driver is stretched thin, the tower’s one-touch delivery effectively gives every operator a dedicated crane operator.

One selection caveat: a single tower suits scenarios with 25 to 40 retrieval events per day. If two or more laser cutters demand material simultaneously, or if sheet varieties exceed 30 types requiring more storage positions, a double-tower or modular multi-tower configuration makes more economic sense. Herochu’s engineering team runs a simulation based on the customer’s actual production takt time during the quotation phase—not just a parameter-sheet comparison.
