Customizable ASRS Sheet Metal Storage Tower

Standard tower models solve most problems. They do not solve all of them. A shop with 5.5 meters of clear height that wants eight layers, sheet stock at 6200×2500mm non-standard dimensions, or a single tower that must handle both 1mm aluminum and 6-ton carbon steel plate—these requirements are not “best-effort accommodated” in Herochu’s Customizable ASRS Sheet Metal Storage Tower line. They are engineered from the structural design stage around the actual parameters.

The first customization dimension is layer height and inter-layer clearance. Standard models default to 350mm clear space, adjustable. If the inventory is mostly thin sheet, clearance can be compressed to fit two or three additional layers within the same building height. If thick plate or fixtured sheets are mixed in, clearance can expand beyond 500mm without compromising structural stability. Herochu’s tower columns use Q235B box-section steel, sized according to vertical compression under full load and lateral deflection during lift travel—not selected from a stock list and then checked for capacity. This means that even for a 15-layer, 5-ton-per-layer configuration, a structural calculation report can be produced rather than a verbal “it should work.”

The second dimension is tray load and sheet compatibility. Standard 3-ton or 5-ton per level covers most scenarios, but customization extends to 6 tons and beyond. For shops storing stainless steel or aluminum, tray support surfaces can be fitted with UHMW liners or roller structures to prevent surface scratching during extraction. For production lines that interface directly with a laser cutter’s loading mechanism, trays can be specified with powered output, so sheets transition from tower exit to cutting bed without secondary lifting.

The third dimension is tower count and expansion pace. Herochu’s modular design allows starting with a single tower and adding columns later under the same control architecture—no PLC replacement or software rewrite. In multi-tower operation, the unified control system knows which sheet is in which tower and which level; operators search by dimension or batch number without specifying a tower ID. This characteristic is practical for businesses that are growing but uncertain about the rate: buy one tower that is sufficient now, add another when orders increase, rather than configuring for three-years-out capacity from day one.

Software-layer customization is equally critical. Standard ERP integration runs through REST API or direct database connection, but if the factory uses a proprietary MES or a regional ERP system, Herochu configures middleware adaptation during commissioning rather than asking the customer to change systems. Inventory views can be adjusted to shop-floor habits: some managers want “remaining sheet count grouped by material,” others want “location occupancy sorted by thickness.” The touchscreen layout is configured around actual usage scenarios before delivery.

One engineering detail worth noting is the match between safety configuration and building conditions. As tower height increases, braking redundancy and anti-drop design for the lift mechanism require corresponding upgrades. If floor load-bearing capacity is limited, the tower base can use an extended baseplate to distribute pressure. Herochu requires customers to provide plant layout, clear height, crane hook path, and floor loading data during the proposal stage—not as a formality, but because this information directly determines the structural solution and quotation.

For shops transitioning from manual storage to automation, customizable towers offer another value: coexistence during the transition period. The tower can be installed beside the existing floor stacking area, with only high-frequency sheets moved inside initially, while forklifts and cranes continue to serve other materials. Once the workflow stabilizes and employees adapt to touchscreen retrieval, more categories can be migrated in. Automation does not need to happen overnight, but the structure must leave room for that progression.
