Automated Sheet Metal Storage Tower System
Inventory data in a sheet metal shop goes wrong for a reason that has nothing to do with laziness: the process is broken. A sheet arrives and someone writes a slip. A sheet leaves and someone shouts across the floor. Month-end stocktake relies on memory and camera footage review. A 5-ton carbon steel plate shows “in stock” in the system when it was actually cut into parts and shipped weeks ago—discovered only when scheduling tries to release a job and has to reorder. Herochu’s Automated Sheet Metal Storage Tower System does not primarily solve “store it faster”—that is the tower’s baseline capability. It solves making inventory data generate automatically during production, without a separate manual entry step.

When a sheet enters the tower, a load cell under the tray records actual weight, the system assigns a storage location based on dimensions and weight, and writes the record to the inventory database. When it exits, the same weighing step confirms the retrieved weight matches the system record. If there is a deviation—say, a remnant from a previous retrieval was not returned to its original position—the system flags the exception on the touchscreen. This is not after-the-fact auditing; every movement is verified. For laser cutting shops that generate substantial remnants, this function matters more than storing a hundred extra full sheets: if a remnant’s dimensions and weight are not in the system, it effectively does not exist at the next scheduling cycle and ends up as scrap in a corner.
The ERP integration method determines whether this data actually gets used. Herochu’s tower control system supports both REST API and direct database connection; the factory ERP can push work orders to the tower’s queue, and the tower returns consumption records after discharge. The more practical scenario is reverse query: a scheduler receives a rush order in the ERP and needs to confirm whether 3mm 304 stainless at 4000×1500 is in stock. No phone call to the warehouse—the tower’s real-time inventory view is right there in the system. If sufficient, lock the batch and queue it for discharge; if not, trigger a purchase requisition at the scheduling stage. The value of this workflow is converting “do we have material” from an interpersonal communication problem into a database query.
Inventory accuracy also improves through a frequently overlooked step: automated stocktaking. Conventional stocktaking requires stopping production and manually counting every stack—time-consuming and error-prone. The on-demand stocktake function in Herochu’s tower system reads all tray weight data and position records, generates a current inventory snapshot, compares it against the ERP book balance, and lists discrepancies with detail. For sheet metal fabricators undergoing ISO quality audits or customer audits, this traceable inventory record holds up to scrutiny in a way handwritten logs do not.
On the operational side, the PLC touchscreen interface is designed around a “minimize input” principle. Retrieval does not require entering a full material code—filtering by dimension (e.g., “4000 wide, 1500 long”) or a batch number prefix is sufficient. The system remembers the most recently discharged specifications and lists common sheets first. For operators unaccustomed to complex software, the learning curve is roughly one meal break. Simultaneously, every operation is logged to a background journal: who retrieved which sheet when, and what remnant was returned, all timestamped. This is not for monitoring people; it is for tracing causes when inventory discrepancies occur.
From an equipment compatibility standpoint, the interface between Herochu storage towers and existing shop logistics is standard: forklift access and overhead crane lifting points are framed into the tower structure. This means going live does not require purchasing AGVs or modifying the floor first. If automated loading is added later, the tower’s exit height and tray positioning accuracy (±2mm) already accommodate robotic gripper requirements.
One final clarification: automated storage towers do not solve every warehousing problem. They excel at high-density storage and rapid direct retrieval of standardized sheet formats. If a shop has large volumes of irregular remnants, tube stock, or non-flat materials, a tower is not the answer. But for laser cutting and bending shops running primarily 3015, 4015, and 4020 format sheets, placing full-sheet inventory under Herochu tower management and connecting the ERP data chain is one of the clearest return-on-investment automation entry points available today.
