Heavy-Duty Pull-Out Drawer Rack for Sheet Metal

Heavy sheet metal—stainless steel plate, thick aluminum, mild steel blanks—presents a specific storage challenge. The material is dense, the surfaces are vulnerable to damage, and the weight makes manual handling hazardous. A heavy-duty pull-out drawer rack for sheet metal addresses all three issues: it supports the weight, protects the material, and eliminates the manual strain that causes injuries.

The Weight Problem

A single sheet of 6 mm mild steel measuring 4×8 feet weighs approximately 280 kilograms. A stack of 20 such sheets exceeds 5 tons. Moving that stack, accessing the bottom sheet, or reorganizing the inventory requires equipment and carries risk. Traditional cantilever racks hold the weight but do not provide easy access to lower levels. Floor stacking is worse—operators must climb on unstable piles or use pry bars to separate sheets.

A heavy-duty pull-out drawer rack solves the access problem by bringing each tier to the operator. The drawer extends 100 percent of its travel, exposing the entire sheet platform. A crane or vacuum lifter then removes the sheet from above, with no lateral dragging and no manual lifting.

Load-Bearing Structure

Each drawer in a Herochu rack supports between 2 and 5 tons. The HC-B2513-63, HC-B3015-63, and HC-B4015-63 handle 3 tons per tier. The HC-B4020-65 and HC-B6020-65 handle 5 tons per tier. The main frame is constructed from Q235B high-strength steel, a material selected for its yield strength and weldability. The dual-beam crossbeam design distributes loads evenly across the structure, eliminating the localized stress points that cause premature failure.

Integral welding is used for all primary structural connections. Bolted joints loosen under the vibration and cyclic loading that heavy drawer operation produces—a failure mode that welding eliminates. The columns are reinforced at their base plates, and the center of gravity is calculated so the system remains stable under the worst-case condition: the top drawer fully extended at maximum load.

Material Protection

Surface damage is a cost issue in fabrication. A scratched stainless sheet may be rejected for architectural work. A bent plate can jam a laser cutting bed or throw off press brake tolerances.

Each sheet rests flat on its own drawer tray, isolated from every other sheet. There is no point loading from stacked weight and no friction between surfaces. Continuous trays carry inclined plastic supports that hold each sheet in place, preventing slippage and keeping the sensitive face away from metal contact. Loading and unloading follow a straight, controlled path, which removes the scraping motion that causes most surface damage.

Optional rubber matting on drawer trays provides additional scratch protection. For shops storing dissimilar metals, the powder-coated finish prevents galvanic corrosion that can occur when materials contact bare steel.

Safety Features

Automatic locking pins engage when a drawer reaches its extended position, holding it rigid against accidental retraction. The pins are mechanical—they function without power, sensors, or software, which is a deliberate choice for industrial environments where electronic components are exposed to metal dust, coolant mist, and temperature fluctuations.

Anti-tip mechanisms and interlock systems prevent more than one drawer from being opened at a time, ensuring the rack’s center of gravity remains within safe limits. Drawer limiters and mechanical stoppers prevent over-extension. Front-end positioning supports with wide bases reduce pressure on the floor and keep the rack stable even when fully loaded.

The full-extension design also improves operator safety by eliminating the need to climb on stacks or reach into confined spaces. The material is presented in a clear, open area, and the operator manages the lift from a safe distance.

Operational Efficiency

Classified storage allows sheet metal to be organized by material type, thickness, or specification. Label slots on each drawer front enable instant identification. Multi-layer separation means drawer 1 holds 3 mm aluminum, drawer 2 holds 5 mm stainless, and so on. Workers know exactly where to find what they need, which reduces picking time and eliminates the search through mixed piles.

Space savings are significant. Vertical layered storage reduces aisle occupation and improves warehouse storage density by 30 to 70 percent compared to floor storage. A six-layer rack stores six square meters of sheet per square meter of floor.

Drawer dimensions are matched to the sheet sizes the shop handles, from 2500×1300 mm up to 6000×2000 mm. Optional casters enable mobile configurations.
