High Density Roll-Out Scrap Rack for Sheet Metal Remnants
The relationship between floor area and storage capacity in a fabrication shop is not fixed. It depends entirely on how the storage system uses vertical space. A horizontal pallet stack holding ten sheets of 2500×1250 millimeter material occupies approximately 3.1 square meters of floor. A Herochu high density roll-out rack holding the same ten sheets occupies approximately 2.8×1.2 meters — a footprint reduction approaching fifty percent.
That number deserves scrutiny because it has direct financial implications. Industrial lease rates in most manufacturing zones are calculated per square meter per year. A shop that reclaims three square meters of floor space by switching from horizontal to vertical remnant storage recovers a tangible operational asset. That space can accommodate a workbench, a staging cart, additional raw material storage, or simply the clearance that makes material movement safer and faster.
Density Without Sacrificing Access
The standard trade-off in storage density is access. Pack more material into a smaller volume, and retrieval becomes more difficult. Shelving systems illustrate this: high-density shelving maximizes cubic capacity but requires operators to navigate narrow aisles and reach into confined spaces. The material is stored efficiently but accessed inefficiently.
Herochu’s roll-out design resolves this trade-off. The drawers slide completely out of the frame, so access does not depend on the space inside the rack. The operator stands in the aisle — or in whatever clearance the rack location provides — and the drawer comes to them. Density is achieved through vertical stacking; access is preserved through full-extension drawers. The two objectives do not compete.
This matters most in shops where remnant volume is high and floor space is tight. A shop running three fiber lasers on two shifts generates remnants continuously. Without a high-density storage system, those remnants spread across the floor in a pattern that mirrors the machines’ locations. The material is technically “stored,” but the storage is unmanaged, inaccessible, and unsafe. A single Herochu rack consolidates the remnant inventory from multiple machines into one organized location, freeing floor space around each cutting station.
The Customization Dimension
Herochu offers the HC-V2513-8 and HC-V3015-8 as standard configurations, but the frame architecture accepts customization without structural compromise. Tier counts can be specified upward or downward. Clear vertical spacing adjusts to match the shop’s typical remnant thickness profile. Drawer load ratings can be confirmed against the customer’s specific material mix — 1000 kilograms per level is standard, but heavier configurations are available for shops storing thick plate remnants.
The customization extends to identification. Each drawer face accepts a label or tag, allowing the shop to designate tiers by material type, thickness range, or color code. A drawer marked “3 mm CRS” tells the operator exactly what lives inside without opening it. This simple organizational layer transforms the rack from a storage container into an inventory system. The operator checking for a usable remnant does not need to open every drawer. They check the labels that match the material required for the current job.
Load Integrity Over Time
The structural challenge in any vertical rack storing heavy sheet remnants is deflection. A drawer loaded with 1000 kilograms of steel will deflect under its own weight if the frame and drawer are not engineered for the load. Over time, deflection becomes permanent deformation, and the drawer no longer slides smoothly. The rack becomes progressively harder to use, which leads to progressive abandonment.
Herochu addresses deflection through frame geometry and drawer construction. The drawer base incorporates reinforcing members that resist sagging under distributed load. The frame uses a rigid box structure that distributes the load from the drawer rails into the base without concentrating stress at connection points. The bearing rails are rated for 100,000 full-load cycles, which provides a reference point for the expected service life under normal operating conditions.
For shops storing material at the upper end of the load rating, Herochu recommends periodic inspection of rail alignment and drawer levelness. The rack is designed to be serviceable in place, so minor adjustments do not require dismantling the frame or returning components to the manufacturer.
Placement Strategy
A high-density remnant rack delivers maximum value when placed strategically. The most effective locations are near the point where remnants are generated — typically adjacent to the laser cutter’s unloading side. This placement minimizes the distance between generation and storage, which is the strongest predictor of whether the storage system will actually be used.
Secondary placements include areas near the shear or press brake, where remnant material from one operation may become raw material for another. A rack positioned between the laser cutting area and the forming area creates a material flow that encourages reuse across operations. Offcuts from laser cutting become blanks for bending, and the rack makes that connection visible and convenient.
Herochu recommends consulting with the shop’s production team before finalizing placement. The most efficient location is not always the most obvious one, and the people who handle remnants daily have the clearest understanding of where the storage system will actually reduce their workload.
