Customized Heavy Duty Roll-Out Cantilever Rack for Square & Rectangular Pipes

Square and rectangular hollow sections present specific storage challenges that round pipe and solid bar do not. Their flat faces allow stable stacking, but their geometry encourages load shifting when stacked incorrectly. A bundle of rectangular tubes stacked with mismatched alignment concentrates weight unevenly, causing the bundle to lean and creating safety risks during retrieval. Herochu’s customized heavy-duty roll-out cantilever rack addresses these challenges through configurable arm geometry, compartment sizing, and mechanical-assist extension.

The Square Tube Problem: Why Standard Racks Fall Short

A standard cantilever rack with flat arms works adequately for round pipe. Round material self-centers on the arm and rolls only along a single axis. Square and rectangular tubes behave differently. A bundle of 100mm × 50mm rectangular tubes stacked 20 pieces wide has a natural tendency to lean toward one side if the individual pieces are not perfectly aligned. During crane or forklift retrieval, the bundle can shift unpredictably, creating pinch points and increasing the risk of dropped loads.

Additionally, the flat faces of square sections mean surface contact area is maximized. On unpadded steel arms, this contact point becomes a wear location—the powder coating erodes, exposing bare steel that rusts and transfers oxide staining to the stored material. For architectural or exposed-application square tube, this surface damage renders material unusable.

Herochu’s Customization Response

Herochu approaches square and rectangular pipe storage through three adjustable parameters: arm geometry, compartment configuration, and surface treatment.

Arm Geometry. For rectangular sections, arms can be configured with a slight back-slope of 2–3 degrees toward the column. This encourages bundles to settle against the upright, using gravity to maintain alignment rather than fighting it. V-shaped trough arms are available for applications where square tube must be stored without any lateral freedom. Adjustable dividers slide along the arm and lock with thumb screws, allowing different widths of rectangular tube to share a single tier without contact.

Compartment Configuration. Standard clear space between layers starts at 600mm. For square and rectangular sections stored in small quantities—the typical pattern for fabricators handling mixed specifications—compartment dividers create dedicated slots for each size. A 5-tier rack might dedicate tier 1 to 150×150mm square tube, tier 2 to 100×50mm rectangular, tier 3 to 80×80mm square, and so on. Retrieval becomes a matter of reading the tier label rather than searching through a mixed pile.

Surface Protection. Polyurethane arm pads are available for applications where surface finish is critical. The 8mm pads prevent metal-to-metal contact and absorb the impact energy of crane-loaded bundles. For aluminum or stainless square tube, this protection is not optional—it is the difference between usable inventory and scrap.

Mechanical Assist and Load Management

The roll-out mechanism proves particularly valuable for square and rectangular tube because these profiles do not self-align during handling. A round pipe bundle placed slightly off-center on a fixed arm will roll into position. A rectangular bundle placed at an angle stays at that angle, and the offset worsens with each subsequent operation.

The crank-out mechanism allows the operator to extend the arm to a comfortable working position, align the bundle precisely, then retract the load into the rack. The constrained movement path prevents the bundle from developing the rotational drift that occurs when loads are pushed into fixed-position arms by forklift.

Load Capacity and Configuration Flexibility

Each compartment supports 3–5 tons depending on model. The HC-G6053 platform handles 6-meter square and rectangular sections at 3,000 kg per level. For 9-meter and 12-meter lengths, the HC-G9065 and HC-G12065 provide 5,000 kg per level.

Single-sided configurations (HC-G6053S) mount against walls for operations where floor space is constrained. Double-sided models double capacity within the same column footprint. The 4+1 and 5+1 layer configurations—four or five roll-out tiers plus a fixed top level—balance accessibility with vertical density. The top level serves as stationary storage for slow-moving or overstock items, while the roll-out tiers handle active inventory.

Durability in Fabrication Environments

Square and rectangular tube storage often occurs in fabrication shops where the rack serves as a buffer between the saw and the welding station. In this environment, the rack experiences near-continuous loading and unloading, the material often arrives coated in cutting fluid or coolant, and the surrounding air contains metal dust and grinding particles.

Herochu’s powder-coated finish addresses the corrosion side of this equation. The full-coverage application—including on bolt holes and weld seams—prevents the localized rust that becomes a structural liability within two to three years on inferior racks. The Q235B steel frame provides the structural durability to withstand repeated dynamic loading without progressive deformation.
