Electric Cantilever Vacuum Lifter for Steel Plate Handling
The electric cantilever vacuum lifter occupies a specific position in the material handling spectrum. It is more capable than a manual pneumatic manipulator and less complex than a fully automated gantry loading system. For steel plate handling in the 300kg to 1000kg range, that middle ground is often the most practical place to be. Understanding why requires looking at what the electric drive actually contributes to the task.

Servo positioning versus pneumatic balance
A pneumatic manipulator uses air pressure to counterbalance the load. The operator moves the plate with minimal effort, but the motion is ultimately manual—the operator decides where the plate goes and the pneumatic system carries the weight. An electric cantilever lifter with servo-driven actuators changes the equation. The motion is powered and controlled. The operator commands a position, and the servo system moves the load there with repeatable accuracy.
Herochu’s electric cantilever systems achieve repeatable positioning within ±2 mm. For steel plate feeding into a laser cutter or press brake, that precision translates directly into reduced setup time. The plate lands in the same position every cycle, so the machine’s program does not need to compensate for variance. The operator does not need to nudge the plate into alignment after the lifter sets it down.
This matters most in repetitive work. A shop cutting the same part number for a week does not need ±2 mm repeatability—the operator learns the placement and hits it consistently by feel. A shop running mixed batches with short cycle times between jobs benefits from the servo system because it removes the human variability that accumulates over a shift.
The cantilever geometry and reach envelope
The cantilever design—a horizontal boom extending from a vertical column—is a compromise between reach and footprint. A bridge crane covers a rectangular area but requires structure on both sides. An articulated arm reaches into corners but has limited span. A cantilever reaches far in one direction and rotates to cover an arc.
Herochu electric cantilever lifters rotate through a defined arc around the column, with boom lengths configured to the shop’s plate storage and machine layout. A 3600 mm boom reaches the center of a 4000×2000 mm stack when the column is positioned at the edge of the storage area. The 700 mm lift stroke covers the height difference between rack storage and machine bed.
The servo drive contributes to smoothness as well as precision. Pneumatic systems can be jerky at the start and end of a move, particularly with heavy loads. Servo acceleration and deceleration profiles keep the plate stable throughout the cycle. For polished stainless or coated steel, that stability prevents the surface scuffs that occur when a plate shifts against the vacuum cups during abrupt motion.
Vacuum grip on steel plate
The vacuum system on Herochu electric cantilever lifters follows the same architecture as the pneumatic units: multiple cups in a fixed array, sized to the load. For steel plate in the 500kg-1000kg range, Herochu uses larger cup diameters and additional cups to maintain holding force with margin.
The electric power source does not change the vacuum principle. The pump or ejector generates negative pressure, the cups seal against the plate, and a reservoir maintains hold if supply is interrupted. The difference is that the electric unit can integrate the vacuum system into the overall control architecture. Vacuum level monitoring, automatic cup engagement sequencing, and fault diagnostics feed into the same controller that manages motion.
Sheet separation and material compatibility
Steel plate stacks present the same adhesion problem as thinner sheets: the top plate may bring the second with it. Herochu incorporates sheet separation into the electric cantilever design. The separation function activates before the lift, breaking the adhesion between plates so that only the commanded sheet is gripped.
The vacuum cups handle carbon steel, stainless, and aluminum without adjustment. The cup material and diameter are selected for the plate weights and surface conditions typical of steel service centers and fabrication shops. For plate with heavy mill scale, the cup flexibility is the critical factor—a rigid cup will leak at scale ridges, while a flexible cup deforms around them.
Safety architecture
The electric cantilever lifter combines two safety domains: vacuum integrity and motion control. Herochu equips the units with gas cut-off protection on the vacuum side and automatic braking on the motion side. If the air supply fails, the vacuum circuit locks and holds the plate. If power is lost, the brakes engage and the boom stops where it is.
These systems are independent. A failure in one does not compromise the other. That independence is the point. A vacuum failure does not cause a motion failure, and a power interruption does not release the plate. The operator has time to assess the situation and take appropriate action rather than responding to a compound failure.
When electric cantilever is the right specification
The electric unit makes sense when the work is repetitive enough to benefit from programmable positioning, when plate weights are at the upper end of what a single operator can manage with pneumatic assist, or when the shop wants to integrate loading with machine scheduling. It is not the right specification for a job shop where every plate is a different size and destination—the programming time would erode the precision advantage.
Herochu builds the electric cantilever systems around the specific plate envelope and machine interface of each installation. The objective is not maximum automation but appropriate automation: enough control to improve consistency, not so much that the system becomes a constraint on flexibility.
