Pneumatic Sheet Metal Manipulator with Vacuum Suction Cups

Pneumatic sheet metal manipulators occupy an interesting position in the material handling market. They are simpler than electric servo systems, more capable than pure manual lifting, and—when specified correctly—more durable than either in environments where dust, temperature variation, and electrical noise are constant companions. The vacuum suction cup is the interface between the machine and the material, and the pneumatic architecture is what makes that interface reliable.

Why air, not oil or electricity

The choice of pneumatic power for a sheet metal manipulator is not a cost compromise. It is an engineering decision with specific advantages. Compressed air does not leak in ways that create slip hazards on the floor. Pneumatic actuators tolerate the temperature swings of an unheated shop without viscosity changes affecting performance. There are no electrical components at the lifting point, which matters in environments where metal dust and oil mist are present.

Herochu builds the HC-RP series around this principle. The vacuum is generated by ejector nozzles rather than an electric pump. Compressed air passes through a venturi, creating negative pressure at the cups. The vacuum responds instantly—cups engage when the valve opens, release when it closes. There is no pump spin-up delay, no accumulator to recharge between cycles.

The trade-off is air consumption, but the ejector design pulls vacuum only during grip and release. During transport, a holding valve maintains suction without continuous air draw. The compressor load is modest for the cycle frequency typical of sheet feeding.

The eight-cup array and what it solves

The vacuum suction cup is the most visible component of the manipulator, and it is also the most misunderstood. A larger cup is not automatically better. A single large cup concentrates stress at one point and fails completely if the seal breaks. Multiple smaller cups distribute load and provide redundancy.

Herochu uses eight cups of 200 mm diameter on the standard HC-RP configurations. The array distributes lifting force across the sheet surface. If one cup encounters a warped edge and loses seal, the remaining seven maintain grip. For cut remnants and irregular parts—the material that is most difficult to handle with any lifting device—this redundancy is the difference between a secure lift and a dropped plate.

The 200 mm diameter is a deliberate specification. Smaller cups concentrate force and lose seal on warped or oily surfaces. Larger cups consume frame space and reduce the number that can fit within the sheet footprint. At 200 mm, eight cups cover the range from 1250×1250 mm minimum sheets to 4000×2000 mm maximum without reconfiguration. The outer cups engage smaller plates; full-size sheets sit under the entire array.

Material behavior and vacuum seal

Carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum each present different surface conditions to the vacuum cups. Hot-rolled carbon steel carries mill scale—a rough oxide layer that actually improves seal texture. Stainless has a smoother, more consistent surface that seals quickly. Aluminum’s oxide layer is thin and stable and does not interfere with adhesion.

The cups themselves are polyurethane, selected for resistance to cutting fluids, drawing oils, and the general contamination of a fabrication floor. When the cups wear—and they do, eventually—replacement is a bolt-on procedure that does not require disassembling the vacuum circuit. Herochu designs the cup mounting for field replacement with hand tools.

Sheet separation is integrated into the pneumatic cycle. Before the lift proceeds, a brief reversal or air blast breaks the adhesion between stacked plates. This prevents the double-sheet pick that can jam a laser or damage a press brake.

Balance and positioning

The pneumatic manipulator’s balance system uses air pressure to counterbalance the load weight. A 500kg steel plate moves with the same effort as a 30kg plate because the system carries the difference. The operator applies directional force; the manipulator carries the weight.

Herochu tunes the balance to the load at the factory and provides adjustment for changes in plate weight. The system holds position at any point in the travel arc when the operator stops moving. There is no drift and no need to maintain a control input to keep the plate in place.

The 220-degree rotation angle and 3600 mm boom length define the working envelope. Placed between a storage rack and a machine bed, the manipulator covers the full transfer path without repositioning the column. The 700 mm lift stroke accommodates the height difference between horizontal storage and machine table elevation.

Safety circuits in a pneumatic system

Gas cut-off protection is standard on Herochu pneumatic manipulators. If the compressed air supply fails—hose rupture, compressor trip, or accidental disconnect—a check valve locks the vacuum circuit and holds the plate. The operator lowers the load manually using the balance system’s residual pressure or the release valve.

The absence of electrical components near the lifting point eliminates spark risk in environments where that matters. It also simplifies maintenance: there is no controller to troubleshoot, no servo to tune, no encoder to align. The pneumatic circuit is accessible and diagnosable with basic shop tools.

The appropriate application

Pneumatic manipulators are the right specification for shops that need mechanical assist without programming complexity. They adapt to the next plate size in seconds because there is no program to change. They tolerate the dust, temperature variation, and intermittent use patterns of job shops and mixed-production facilities.

Herochu configures each unit around the shop’s plate envelope, with cup count and boom length matched to the actual work rather than a catalog maximum. The pneumatic sheet metal manipulator is not the most sophisticated material handling device available. It is often the most appropriate one.
