Steel Pipes Storage Rack for 6 Meter Aluminum Profiles
Aluminum profiles present storage challenges that steel pipe does not. The material is softer, more susceptible to surface marking, and often destined for visible architectural or consumer-facing applications where finish quality determines acceptance. A rack that performs adequately for steel pipe may produce unusable inventory when loaded with 6-meter aluminum extrusions. Herochu’s steel pipe storage rack, configured specifically for aluminum profiles, addresses these material-specific requirements through padding, load distribution, and controlled handling.
Why Aluminum Requires Different Storage Logic
The Mohs hardness of aluminum is approximately 2.5–3, compared to 4–4.5 for mild steel. This difference means that aluminum surfaces scratch against steel contact points under loads that would leave steel unharmed. A 3-ton bundle of aluminum extrusion resting on a bare steel arm with a 200mm contact width creates point loads that exceed the material’s yield strength at the contact interface. The result is visible indentation—cosmetic rejection for architectural profiles, or dimensional nonconformance for precision extrusion.
Beyond surface damage, aluminum has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than steel. In unconditioned warehouse environments, a 6-meter aluminum profile expands and contracts approximately 0.5mm over a 20°C temperature swing. For tightly bundled profiles, this movement causes rubbing between adjacent pieces, abrading anodized or painted finishes even without direct contact with the rack structure.
Herochu’s Aluminum-Specific Configuration
The standard Herochu cantilever rack platform adapts to aluminum storage through three modifications: contact surface material, arm spacing, and compartment isolation.
Contact Surface. Polyurethane arm pads replace bare steel as the material contact point. The 8mm pads have a Shore A hardness of approximately 90—firm enough to support heavy loads without significant deflection, soft enough to prevent aluminum surface penetration. The pads are field-replaceable, allowing worn sections to be renewed without disassembling the rack.
Arm Spacing. Aluminum extrusions, particularly thin-wall architectural profiles, are more susceptible to mid-span sag than steel pipe of equivalent length. Herochu engineers calculate arm spacing based on profile moment of inertia and weight per meter, ensuring the unsupported span does not exceed the threshold where elastic deformation becomes permanent. For 6-meter profiles, this often means four or more support arms per tier rather than the two-arm minimum used for steel pipe.
Compartment Isolation. Each tier’s compartments are separated by dividers that prevent adjacent bundles from making contact. For anodized or painted profiles, this isolation eliminates the rubbing damage that occurs when temperature-driven expansion causes bundles to shift against each other.
Telescopic Advantages for Aluminum Handling
The telescopic roll-out mechanism offers specific benefits for aluminum profile storage that go beyond general accessibility. When a crane or forklift places an aluminum bundle on a fixed cantilever arm, the bundle slides across the arm surface during final positioning. Even with polyurethane padding, this sliding contact creates a risk of surface abrasion, particularly if grit or metal particles are present on the pad surface.
With the telescopic design, the operator extends the arm to the aisle, the crane lowers the bundle vertically onto the extended arm, and the arm retracts with the load in place. The bundle never slides against the arm surface. Vertical placement eliminates the horizontal friction that causes most cosmetic damage during storage operations.
Load Distribution and Profile Integrity
A 6-meter aluminum profile bundle weighing 2 tons distributed across three support points each carries approximately 667 kg. Across two support points, the same load concentrates at 1,000 kg per point—a 50% increase in point loading. For thin-wall profiles, this difference determines whether the bundle exits storage within dimensional tolerance or with permanent set.
Herochu’s dual-beam crossbar design distributes load between adjacent arms on the same tier, effectively increasing the number of support points without requiring additional columns. Under full rated load, deflection stays within engineering tolerances, and the arms return to true position when unloaded—a critical characteristic for maintaining consistent support geometry over years of operation.
Model Selection for 6-Meter Profiles
The HC-G6053 and HC-G6053S are the standard models for 6-meter aluminum profile storage. Both support 3,000 kg per level across five customizable layers. The HC-G6053S is single-sided for wall-mounted installation; the HC-G6053 is double-sided for free-standing use. The 600mm clear space between layers accommodates most profile bundle heights, with customization available for larger cross-sections or higher bundle stacks.
For operations that also handle 9-meter or 12-meter aluminum profiles, the HC-G9065 and HC-G12065 provide the longer frame length with the same aluminum-specific padding and isolation options.
Environmental Considerations
Aluminum profile storage often occurs in environments where temperature and humidity vary. The powder-coated steel frame resists the condensation corrosion that attacks unprotected structures in these conditions. The polyurethane pads are closed-cell and do not absorb moisture, eliminating the fungal growth and material degradation that affect open-cell foam padding.
For facilities storing anodized profiles where even minor surface contamination is unacceptable, Herochu offers stainless steel arm upgrades and cleanroom-compatible powder coatings. These options extend the platform’s applicability to medical device manufacturing and semiconductor fabrication support operations.
Application Profile: Window and Facade Manufacturer
A manufacturer of architectural window systems stored 6-meter anodized aluminum profiles in 15 different cross-sections. Previous floor stacking with wooden dunnage caused scratching on visible surfaces and required two workers for every retrieval. Herochu supplied an HC-G6053 double-sided rack with:
-
Five roll-out levels per side
-
Polyurethane pads on all arm surfaces
-
Dedicated compartments sized for each profile cross-section
-
Floor-mounted rail system for single-aisle operation
The customer reported a 70% reduction in surface defects and a 40% reduction in retrieval labor. The rack paid for itself through reduced scrap and labor savings within 14 months.
