Servo Swing Steel Plate Suction Crane for Laser Cutting Machines

The term “crane” in sheet metal fabrication traditionally conjures images of overhead bridge cranes with chains, hooks, and slings. The Herochu servo swing steel plate suction crane redefines that concept — replacing hooks and slings with a column-mounted swing arm terminating in a vacuum suction cup array that grips steel plates flatly and evenly across their surface area.

Suction Crane vs. Conventional Lifting

Conventional plate lifting uses chains, magnets, or clamps. Chains concentrate load at lift points and can deform thin sheets. Magnets work on ferrous materials but fail on stainless steel and aluminum. Clamps require edge access and manual engagement for every sheet. The Herochu suction crane sidesteps all three limitations. Vacuum suction cups distribute the lifting force across the sheet surface, work on carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum alike, and engage automatically through the valve-controlled pneumatic system.

The result is a lifting method that handles mixed-material fabrication shops without tooling changes and protects sheet surfaces from the marks and dents that chain and clamp lifting leaves behind.

Vacuum System Architecture

The Herochu suction crane uses multiple sets of heavy-load oil-resistant suction cups. Each cup is individually valve-controlled — meaning the system can open or close cups based on sheet dimensions. A small sheet activates fewer cups; a full-size sheet activates the complete array. This selective engagement prevents the edge vacuum loss that occurs when inactive cups on an oversized array bleed vacuum pressure away from the cups actually in contact with the sheet.

The SNS pneumatic system supplies regulated vacuum to the cup array. Pneumatic routing uses color-coded pipes — blue for inbound air, red (orange) for outbound — with every connector labeled for identification and maintenance. This color-and-label system reduces the risk of maintenance errors that could compromise vacuum performance or create unsafe lifting conditions.

Servo Drive and Positioning

The crane’s swing arm is positioned by a servo swinging-arm positioning transmission, and vertical lift is driven by a large-torque servo synchronous lifting mechanism. The combination delivers controlled, repeatable motion that chain-hoist cranes cannot achieve. Lifting speed ranges from 1 to 5.5 m/min across a 700 mm stroke. Swing rotation covers ±60 degrees — enough to move sheets between storage, inspection, and laser cutting bed positions without the sweeping arc of a full-rotation jib crane.

Repeatability of ±2 mm means the crane places sheets in the same position cycle after cycle. For laser cutting machine loading, this consistency allows the laser operator to trust that the sheet origin matches the programmed nesting origin without re-referencing after each load.

Safety Systems

The Herochu suction crane is built around the principle that a suspended steel plate must never fall. Three independent safety layers enforce this:

Power-off retention. If electrical power or compressed air is interrupted, the suction cups hold the plate for five minutes. This window allows operators to clear the area, diagnose the interruption, and either restore service or execute a controlled manual lowering procedure.

Emergency air-cut protection. An emergency stop immediately cuts the pneumatic supply and triggers the automatic braking system, halting all swing arm motion. The arm locks in position rather than coasting to an uncontrolled stop.

Automatic braking. The braking system engages during normal stop sequences and emergency stops alike, preventing arm drift under load.

Safety warning labels, maintenance labels, and operation instructions are affixed at key locations on the equipment. The system operates in both manual and automatic modes, with bilingual (Chinese and English) button function identifiers.
