Fiber Laser Cutting Loading System With Servo Swing Plate Suction
Fiber laser cutting machines have transformed sheet metal fabrication with cutting speeds and edge quality that legacy plasma and mechanical systems cannot match. But the productivity gains of a high-wattage fiber laser mean nothing if the machine sits idle while operators manually schlep steel plates onto the cutting bed. The Herochu servo swing arm handling manipulator closes this gap — automating the loading sequence so the laser cutter runs at its designed duty cycle.
The Loading Problem
A typical fiber laser cutting machine processes a standard sheet in minutes. Manual loading of a 300 kg steel plate onto the cutting bed, by contrast, can take several minutes of crane positioning, chain rigging, manual alignment, and unhooking. The laser waits. The operator tires. Sheet positioning varies from load to load, which forces the laser operator to re-reference the origin or accept cut tolerance drift.
The Herochu loading system eliminates this mismatch. By combining a servo-driven swing arm with an integrated vacuum suction array, the system picks a sheet from the storage rack, rotates it into position, and places it on the laser cutting bed in one continuous motion — controlled by a PC-driven automatic loading sequence.
Integrated Sheet Separation
One persistent challenge in automated laser loading is sheet separation. Stacked steel plates, especially oiled or freshly cut sheets, tend to stick together. If the suction system lifts two sheets instead of one, the laser cutting program nests incorrectly and the lower sheet may be damaged or jam the machine.
The Herochu system integrates a sheet separation function directly into the loading cycle. Before the suction cups engage full vacuum, the separation mechanism — combined with the selective opening-and-closing valve system on each suction cup — ensures only the top sheet is lifted. The oil-resistant suction cups maintain grip on coated and oiled plates without slippage, and the individual valve control means cup engagement patterns adapt to different sheet sizes without manual reconfiguration.
Servo Swing Arm Mechanics
The swing arm rotates ±60 degrees, which is sufficient to bridge the path between an adjacent sheet storage rack and the laser cutting bed without requiring a full 180-degree rotation. This constrained rotation range keeps cycle time fast and reduces the mechanical stress on the positioning transmission compared to continuous-rotation designs.
Lifting is driven by the large-torque servo synchronous lifting mechanism, delivering smooth vertical travel at 1–5.5 m/min across a 700 mm stroke. The servo drive eliminates the jerky motion and positioning drift common in pneumatic-only lift systems, which is critical when placing sheets onto a laser bed that may have pin-type or mat-type support grids requiring precise placement to avoid support damage.
Material and Size Range
The Herochu loader handles the full range of materials typical in fiber laser fabrication: carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Sheet thickness spans 1–20 mm, covering the vast majority of fiber laser cutting applications. Sheet dimensions up to 3000 × 1500 mm or 4000 × 1500 mm match the standard bed sizes of mid-range and large-format fiber laser cutting machines. The system supports plate weights from 300 kg up to 1000 kg, meaning even thick plate loads within the laser’s cutting capacity can be automated.
Control System and Operation
An Omron numerical control system governs the loading sequence. The touch screen HMI communicates with the PLC via network cable, giving the operator a single interface for initiating automatic loading cycles, monitoring suction status, and switching between manual and automatic modes. Button function identifiers are bilingual — Chinese and English — which simplifies operator training in mixed-language shop environments.
Safety During Laser Integration
Safety engineering takes on added importance when the loading system operates in proximity to a running laser cutter. The Herochu system includes power-off protection that maintains suction cup grip for five minutes after power or air loss, preventing a suspended sheet from dropping onto the laser bed or into the machine enclosure. Emergency air-cut protection and automatic braking bring the swing arm to an immediate controlled stop. Color-coded pneumatic pipes (blue in, red out) with labeled connectors simplify maintenance and reduce the risk of reconnecting lines incorrectly after service.
Productivity Impact
By automating the loading cycle, the Herochu servo swing arm system increases laser cutter utilization. The machine no longer waits for manual loading. One operator can manage the loading system and the laser cutter from the HMI rather than dedicating two workers to the loading task. For shops running lights-out or extended shifts, the automated loading sequence enables continuous laser cutter operation with reduced labor overhead.
