CE-Certified Honeycomb Pipe Storage Racks

A CE mark on an industrial rack can mean several different things depending on the product’s intended use and the manufacturer’s conformity route. For a warehouse manager or procurement engineer comparing honeycomb pipe storage racks, the certificate is only useful when it is read against the right standard and the right scope.

Where EN 1090-1 Fits—and Where It Does Not

EN 1090-1 is the harmonised standard for structural steel components placed on the EU market under the Construction Products Regulation (EU) 305/2011. It covers factory production control and the declaration of performance for load-bearing structural members. Self-supporting rack-clad structures and mezzanine floors commonly fall within this route because they are permanently incorporated into a building or civil works.

A freestanding honeycomb pipe storage rack inside an existing workshop is a different question. It may still be engineered as a steel structure, but whether EN 1090-1 applies depends on how the product is classified and installed. Some manufacturers certificate their racks against EN 1090-1 voluntarily; others reference the standard for the structural steelwork while treating the storage function as equipment. The certificate is not interchangeable between these cases.

What the Buyer Should Ask

The first question is not “Do you have CE?” but “Which standard and which part?” EN 1090-1 covers conformity assessment and factory production control. EN 1090-2 defines the technical execution requirements for steel structures. A certificate that cites only EN 1090-1 without a stated execution class tells the buyer that a factory control system exists, but not the level of structural verification applied to the welds, tolerances, and inspection regime.

The second question is scope. Does the certificate cover the honeycomb modules, the base frames, the mezzanine option, and the material cart interface—or only the primary uprights? A rack that carries a valid certificate for the main frame but adds an uncertified mezzanine on top creates a mixed-scope installation.

Herochu lists CE certification in its heavy-duty honeycomb rack documentation, positioning the certificate alongside the mechanical and load-rating specifications rather than as a standalone marketing claim. For a project requiring documented conformity, the useful next step is to request the certificate number, the standard edition, and the execution class declared.

Why This Matters for High-Density Storage

Honeycomb racks concentrate load into a vertical grid of independent compartments. Unlike a pallet rack where the load sits in a predictable footprint, a honeycomb compartment may hold a bundle of pipe whose weight distribution shifts as individual lengths are withdrawn. The structural design must account for the change in load pattern over the life of the installation, not only the initial full-bundle condition.

This is where the distinction between a CE mark and an engineering review becomes practical. A CE certificate confirms that a conformity assessment route was followed. It does not replace a site-specific check of the slab loading, anchor design, or the crane interface. The certificate is evidence of manufacturing control; the installation review is evidence of fitness for the actual building.

Balancing Certification With Expandability

Honeycomb racks are often bought with the intention of adding bays later. Modularity is one of the format’s main advantages. But expansion can affect the conformity scope if the added modules change the structural behaviour of the assembly or introduce a mezzanine. A buyer planning phased growth should ask whether the certificate allows field expansion within the declared performance envelope, and what documentation is required when new compartments are added.

The sensible procurement sequence is: classify the installation, identify the applicable standard, request the certificate scope in writing, and then compare load ratings and bay configurations. A CE certificate is a starting point for technical due diligence, not a substitute for it.
