Herochu’s Smart Sheet Metal Storage & Gantry Handling System treats storage as an active, integrated stage of production. The warehouse does not wait for a request. It anticipates it, retrieves the correct material, and delivers it to the machine before the previous job finishes.

The Architecture of Continuous Flow

The system comprises four synchronized subsystems: a three-dimensional storage tower, a bilateral gantry truss, a loading and unloading manipulator, and a double-layer finished-material cart. The tower stores raw sheets across eight to ten customizable layers, with per-layer load capacities of 3,000 to 5,000 kg and maximum sheet weights of 500 kg. The gantry truss spans both the tower face and the laser infeed, allowing the manipulator to travel between storage and cutting bed without crossing the shop floor. The manipulator itself is a composite truss design that handles both loading and unloading. On the inbound stroke, it lifts a raw sheet from the tower and places it on the laser bed. On the outbound stroke, it removes the finished skeleton and deposits it on the material cart. The cart shuttles between the tower and the machine at 5–15 m/min, keeping cut parts moving toward downstream operations while fresh stock moves inward.

Multi-Machine Synchronization: The Real Force Multiplier

A single laser fed by an automated tower is more productive. Multiple lasers fed by a single Herochu system is a different category of operation. The PLC control system coordinates material retrieval, loading, and unloading across several cutting machines simultaneously. When one laser finishes a nest, the system already knows which sheet comes next based on the production schedule. When two machines request material at the same moment, the software sets priorities and calculates the optimal retrieval route. The tower functions as a shared buffer—different grades, thicknesses, and sheet sizes occupy dedicated layers, and the system switches between them without stopping the line. Mixed-material jobs that once required manual changeovers between machines now run back to back. The operator’s role shifts from moving sheets to supervising the HMI, monitoring schedules, and intervening only when a job changes.

Sheet Handling That Protects the Product

Every contact between the machine and the sheet is an opportunity for damage. Scratched surfaces, bent edges, and misaligned placement all create rework or scrap. Herochu addresses this at the end effector. The manipulator uses vacuum suction cups from established brands, each with an independent control switch that the controller can toggle as needed. The relative position of each cup adjusts within a defined range to match different sheet sizes and nest patterns. For loading, the vacuum array distributes holding force across the sheet surface, avoiding the concentrated stress that mechanical clamps can introduce. The pneumatic rotating structure turns sheets 90 degrees when the job requires longitudinal rather than transverse feeding—a capability that eliminates manual reorientation and the errors it introduces. Repeatability of ±2 mm ensures that every sheet lands where the nesting software expects it, protecting slat life and cut accuracy.

Customization Without Compromise

Herochu does not sell a fixed catalog product. Each system is engineered around the customer’s floor plan, laser models, and material mix. The HC-A series supports sheet dimensions from 3000×1500 mm to 6000×2000 mm, with clear space customizable to 350 mm and storage layers configurable from eight to ten. Loading arm horizontal speed runs 10–30 m/min, lifting speed 5–10 m/min. The control system integrates with ERP and MES layers, providing real-time inventory visibility and consumption tracking. For shops moving toward lights-out operation, the system can run unattended with the tower loaded at shift end, producing finished parts by morning. Herochu’s engineers handle the 3-D layout, factory acceptance testing, and on-site commissioning.
