The fundamental constraint in profile storage is the relationship between floor area and storage volume. Horizontal racking spreads inventory across the floor plane, consuming square footage that could otherwise support production activity. Vertical storage systems invert this relationship, building storage capacity upward into unused overhead space.

Herochu’s Automated Profile Silo Storage System takes vertical storage to its logical conclusion. The silo architecture organizes storage compartments in a tower configuration, with each level functioning as an independent storage cell accessed by a central gantry column. This arrangement maximizes the number of storage positions within a given footprint — a critical advantage for facilities where floor space is the binding constraint on production capacity.

The silo design accommodates profile lengths up to 8,000 mm as standard, with customized configurations extending to 12,000 mm for facilities handling long structural sections. Per-level load capacity reaches 5,000 kg, sufficient for heavy bundles of steel pipe, beam, and structural tube.

Centralized Material Flow and Line-Side Delivery

The silo configuration concentrates material handling into a single retrieval point, simplifying the interface between storage and production. Rather than positioning racks throughout the facility adjacent to each consuming workstation, the silo serves as a central material buffer, delivering retrieved bundles to line-side staging positions on demand.

This centralized model enables production scheduling features that distributed storage cannot reliably support. Just-in-time staging programs the silo to retrieve and position material for the next shift before that shift begins. Kit sequencing assembles matched sets of profiles for welding or assembly stations, delivering grouped material without operators sorting through mixed bundles. Minimum-level reorder triggers monitor consumption rates per SKU, pushing procurement alerts to the ERP when stock falls below programmed thresholds.

Real-Time Inventory Accuracy

The inventory accuracy problem in manual profile storage is structural, not procedural. Cycle counts close the gap between recorded and actual stock periodically, but the counting process itself is labor-intensive and disruptive. Between counts, the recorded inventory drifts as bundles are misplaced, misidentified, or consumed without transaction logging.

The Herochu silo eliminates this drift by design. The gantry is the only mechanism that moves material within the silo. Every movement — storage, retrieval, relocation — writes a database transaction automatically. The inventory count displayed on the HMI or pushed to the ERP is not a periodic snapshot; it is the live state of the silo, accurate to the second.

This real-time accuracy extends beyond simple stock counts. The transaction log records the supplier, heat number, inbound date, and every production order that consumed material from a given bundle. If a fabricated assembly fails inspection and the investigation points to a material defect, root cause analysis that might take days of manual record searching completes in minutes through a database query.

Integration with Fabrication Workflows

The silo’s control system communicates over standard industrial protocols — PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP, and OPC UA — enabling integration with existing factory IT infrastructure without custom middleware. The integration layer maps silo transactions to the ERP or WMS data model, with inventory receipts, issues, reservations, and adjustments flowing in both directions.

For facilities without a full ERP, the Herochu silo controller operates as a standalone inventory management system. The HMI provides stock reports, transaction histories, reorder alerts, and consumption trend graphs without upstream system dependency. As the operation grows and ERP adoption becomes necessary, the integration interface is already present.

Safety Architecture for Automated Handling

Line-side material delivery places automated equipment in closer proximity to production personnel than a fenced-off warehouse does. Herochu accounts for this with safety architecture that scales to the specific installation. The gantry zone remains behind perimeter fencing with interlocked gates. Output stations incorporate light curtains or pressure-sensitive mats that halt the delivery sequence if a person is present. The control system distinguishes between safety-critical stops — which drop power to all drive axes and require manual reset — and process stops, which halt the sequence in a controlled manner with the load held in place.
